Like the man himself, the wines of Gabriele Rausse are immensely charming, and bear an unmistakable European stamp.  The genial, Italian-born winemaker has become the go-to person for vineyard consulting throughout Virginia. In the late 1990s, after years of consulting for many of Virginia's top wineries (as well as serving as assistant director of vineyards and grounds at Jefferson's Monticello), Rausse started his own operation, Gabriele Rausse Winery, located on a seven-acre estate in Charlottesville, Virginia. His stylish 2013 Vin Gris de Pinot Noir, made from 100% Pinot Noir, is made very much in the style of a Marsannay rosé from Burgundy, but with just the barest hint of salmon color. With a fresh, ripe bouquet, in the mouth it is full, fresh, and enticing, with a tender fruitiness that recalls vine-grown peaches and fresh-cut strawberries. While eminently quaffable, this wine also has the stuffing to pair beautifully with grilled salmon, steamed lobster, and light poultry.
